Authority
I haven’t forgotten about giving my thoughts on the Romans 7 sermon, I just wanted to give you all as much time as possible to listen to it.
In the meantime, another subject that has I have been giving much thought to lately is authority. I have been pondering lately why it is that we are so apt to ignore or even outright rebel against God’s authority (and, by extension, godly authorities), but we accept, sometimes unquestioningly, human authorities.
Now, many people believe that there should be no authorities; that we should all live as “equals”. One of the things that I remember from my high school science classes is that nature abhors a vacuum. This same principle is at work when it comes to authority; there is no way to do away with all authority. If we try to remove one authority, another will rush in and take its place. This is true all the way from national governments to leadership in the home. Someone must be the authority.
I’m painting with a very broad brush here with the intention of going back and filling in the details later. Think about it for a bit and we’ll discuss it later.
